Summary

Initial rectal cancer symptoms can vary, which makes timely diagnosis challenging. This retrospective cohort study of 205 patients undergoing rectal cancer resection explores factors contributing to diagnostic delay. The results show that younger age and mild symptoms were associated with delayed presentation. Patients initially seen in primary care were more likely to experience diagnostic delays than those initially assessed at emergency departments, highlighting access pathways and referral processes as potential diagnostic-safety targets.
