We kicked off our webinar series with our first event, “Health AI Policy to Advance Patient Rights, Interests, and Voices,” featuring the latest updates from The Light Collective. Tommy Wang, PhD, moderated a panel of speakers, including Andrea Downing and Valencia Robinson from The Light Collective, Ysabel Duron from the Latino Cancer Institute, and Liz Salmi from OpenNotes. Together, they shared how they are amplifying the voices of patients to influence real-world AI governance and improve patient safety. There also was a robust Q&A portion of the program with thoughtful questions from the audience.

About The Light Collective

Formed in 2019 by a grassroots team of patient activists, clinicians, and health data experts, The Light Collective is a nonprofit organization working to advance the collective rights, interests, and voices of patient communities in health tech. Their work is focused on health privacy and security research; digital rights for patient communities; and social support for patients seeking knowledge, resources, and community.

Tommy Wang, PhD
Moderator
Dr. Wang is a healthcare and organizational economist focused on transforming healthcare through actionable analytics, behavioral interventions, and innovation in care delivery. He recently led the technology strategy for the Diagnostic Excellence Initiative at the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, where he promoted diagnostic excellence primarily in three clinical categories: acute vascular events, infections, and cancer.

Co-founder and Board President, The Light Collective
Ms. Downing has been a prominent figure in health privacy research, focusing on the implications of technology and social media on patient data privacy. Her work has been instrumental in driving changes that aim to safeguard patient privacy in the increasingly digital landscape of healthcare.

Director of Community Outreach, The Light Collective
Ms. Robinson is a nationally recognized advocate, and founding member of The Light Collective. Recognizing the need to address disparities for women of color, Valencia founded Women of Color Wellness Alliance, which provides support to women of color with breast cancer, heart disease, stroke, and diabetes to help all women of color achieve optimal wellness.

Ysabel Duron
Founder & CEO, The Latino Cancer Institute
Ms. Duron is a pioneering, award-winning Latina journalist, a cancer survivor, and for the last 23 years, a leading patient activist around Latino community engagement. Previously, her former agency developed programs for low-income, Spanish-speaking and immigrant communities to address gaps along the cancer continuum. She recently was appointed by President Joe Biden to the National Cancer Advisory Board.

Communications & Patient Initiatives Director, OpenNotes
Ms. Salmi is a seasoned patient advocate living with a malignant brain tumor. Through her role with OpenNotes at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Liz partners with clinicians, hospitals, health systems, and patient advocates to navigate the evolving landscape of patient-clinician communication in an era of unprecedented health information transparency.
