About the Event

CoDEx's inaugural director, Sumant Ranji, MD, moderated our July webinar to explore the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in medical education and diagnostic performance with two leaders at the forefront of this field. Raja-Elie E. Abdulnour, MD, from NEJM Group discussed "The Natural Language of Clinical Education," and Verity Schaye, MD, MHPE, from the NYU Grossman School of Medicine shared about "Artificial Intelligence-Based Assessment to Enhance Internal Medicine Resident Clinical Reasoning Practices."

Dr. Ranji is a renowned leader in patient safety, quality improvement, and medical education. He first joined UCSF as a fellow in hospital medicine and clinical research, then went on to become a faculty member in the Division of Hospital Medicine at UCSF Health, where he held multiple leadership positions. As director of CoDEx, Dr. Ranji leads the center’s strategic planning and the execution of its work to champion diagnostic excellence research and build awareness of and engagement within the field.

He is a highly cited researcher and is currently working on the application of AI in healthcare and education. Dr. Abdulnour is a recent National Academy of Medicine Scholar in Diagnostic Excellence.

Dr. Schaye’s work focuses on the integration of technology and artificial intelligence in the teaching and assessment of clinical reasoning, and she has been grant-funded by the NBME Stemmler fund to support this work focusing on AI assessment of clinical reasoning documentation. Recently, she was selected as a National Academy of Medicine Scholar in Diagnostic Excellence focusing on developing an AI-based diagnostic performance feedback system.


About the National Academy of Medicine Scholars in Diagnostic Excellence Program

Funded by the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, this collaborative program in partnership with the Council of Medical Specialty Societies (CMSS) is designed to develop a cadre of leaders who can drive implementation of effective strategies to raise awareness of diagnosis in medicine, support diagnostic excellence, and reduce diagnostic errors at the national level. Scholars participate in this one-year, part-time remote experience to enhance their knowledge and skills in diagnostic quality, safety, and equity and accelerate their career development in becoming national leaders in the field. With additional support from The John A. Hartford Foundation, an additional scholar with a focus on advancing diagnostic excellence, including diagnostic safety, quality, and equity for older adults may be selected. Learn more here
