About the Event
Our June event featured the latest updates from the Health AI Partnership (HAIP). Moderator Tommy Wang, PhD, hosted a panel of experts and leadership council members from HAIP to share and answer questions about available resources, such as the HAIP Key Decision Points and Health Equity Across the AI Lifecycle (HEAAL) framework. They also responded to numerous insightful questions during the Q&A portion of the program.

Tommy Wang, PhD
Moderator
Tommy is a healthcare and organizational economist focused on transforming healthcare through actionable analytics, behavioral interventions, and innovation in care delivery. He recently led the technology strategy for the Diagnostic Excellence Initiative at the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, where he promoted diagnostic excellence primarily in three clinical categories: acute vascular events, infections, and cancer.
Suresh Balu, MS, MBA
Director for the Duke Institute for Health Innovation (DIHI)
As program director for DIHI, Suresh works closely with Duke Health leadership to develop innovation frameworks and approaches across healthcare delivery, education, and research. His responsibilities include strategic evaluation of opportunities, complex strategic, operational and financial analyses, and recommendations for Duke Health leadership and corporate development for global and US-based collaborations as they relate to an innovation platform.
Alifia Hasan, B Pharm, MBA
Innovation Portfolio Manager
Alifia is an innovation portfolio manager at DIHI and leads the project management and implementation of externally funded projects. These projects bring together domain experts, community representatives, and academic leaders to cultivate an ecosystem that promotes safe, effective, and responsible diffusion of AI/ML in healthcare. Her other projects use innovative data science techniques to help solve challenging clinical problems.
Jee Young Kim, PhD
Qualitative Research Scientist, DIHI
Jee Young is a social science research scientist at DIHI. She conducts qualitative research with various stakeholders involved in the adoption of AI in healthcare. In this role, she connects with frontline clinicians and helps develop best practices in the safe and responsible adoption of AI.
Sara Murray, MD, MAS
Chief Health AI Officer, UCSF Health
Sara is the chief health AI officer for UCSF Health and associate chief for health system partnerships in the UCSF Division of Clinical Informatics and Digital Transformation (DoC-IT). Her team builds infrastructure and governance processes to ensure the deployment of impactful and ethical AI, evaluates commercially available tools and algorithms for trustworthiness prior to implementation, and develops new machine learning models to address pressing health system problems.
Mark Sendak, MD, MPP
Clinical Data Scientist, DIHI
Mark is the population health and data Sscience Lead at DIHI, where he leads interdisciplinary teams of data scientists, clinicians, and machine learning experts to build technologies that solve real clinical problems. He co-leads Health AI Partnership, a learning collaborative to advance the safe, effective, and equitable use of AI software within healthcare delivery organizations.
Keo Shaw, MA, PGD
Digital Health Counsel, DLA Piper
Keo advises life sciences, technology, and healthcare clients on a range of regulatory, compliance, and transactional issues. She has particularly rich experience advising on regulatory issues presented by digital health technologies. She is part of DLA Piper’s FDA Regulatory and AI practices, regularly advising, speaking, and publishing on legal issues arising from the application of novel medical technologies.
Alexandra Valladares
Community Representative, DIHI
Alexandra is a community organizer whose passion is to tend to the relationships that underpin underserved communities’ social realities and promote health, educational advancement, economic mobility, and other aspects of family wellbeing. Bringing years of experience as a community advocate, she aims to foster necessary community conversations around the use of technology and strengthen the connection between families, health institutions, and communities to improve health outcomes.
