AI health chatbots like ChatGPT Health are increasingly the first stop for people wondering whether their symptoms warrant a trip to the ER. But how safe and accurate is that guidance for patients?
In a landmark Nature Medicine study, researchers at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai put ChatGPT Health to the test and found troubling gaps: the tool directed over half of true emergencies toward a 24-48 hour follow-up rather than the emergency department, and its suicide-risk safeguards were more likely to trigger in lower-risk scenarios than when users disclosed specific plans for self-harm.
