2026 Call for Applications (due March 2) – NAM/CMSS Scholars in Diagnostic Excellence

The 2026 Call for Applications for the National Academy of Medicine (NAM) Scholars in Diagnostic Excellence in partnership with the Council of Medical Specialty Societies is currently open until 3:00pm ET on March 2. Funded by the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, this program is designed to develop a cadre of leaders who can drive implementation of effective strategies to improve diagnostic excellence and reduce diagnostic errors at the national level. Beginning in late June, a total of 6-8 scholars will participate in this one-year, part-time remote leadership development experience, which includes monthly educational sessions with distinguished experts; in-person networking opportunities through the NAM and CMSS; mentorship from national experts; a $35,000 grant; and an additional $5,000 in domestic travel funds.

Eligibility

The program seeks exceptional mid-career individuals who:

  • Have earned a doctoral degree* in a relevant discipline and completed all post-graduate training
  • Have confirmation from academic department, health system, or equivalent that they have—and can dedicate—sufficient time to participate in the NAM Scholars’ program activities and complete their proposed program in the allotted time

*MD, DO, PhD, DNP, DrPH, etc.

This program aims to promote work that is relevant to the U.S. health care system and build the workforce to improve diagnosis within the U.S. health care system. Hence, this program is limited to U.S. applicants who are affiliated with U.S.-based institutions and are U.S. citizens or permanent residents.
